After bumping up its Prime subscription cost, Amazon is offering new perks to entice those to stick with the $100 annual cost.
The online retail giant announced April 5 that it will partner with Nintendo to offer a free 12-month subscription to Nintendo Switch Online, which retails for about 3.99 per month, 7.99 for three months or $19.99 for the year. Nintendo Switch Online allows for Nintendo Switch console users to access online game content, such as classic Mario games or NES games fitted for the Switch, and play with other online Nintendo Switch users.
Amazon is promoting this free membership to Prime Members through Twitch, a game streaming service Amazon acquired in 2014. The offer is only available to Twitch Prime members, who have an Amazon Prime account and Twitch account. Members can claim their free Twitch Prime membership online by logging into Twitch with their user credentials, their Amazon Prime credentials and claiming it on the site.
Twitch Prime is a premium experience on Twitch that comes with an Amazon Prime membership.
According to Twitch, Twitch Prime members will receive the free membership to Nintendo Switch Online after visiting twitch.amazon.com/Nintendo.
Starting today, Twitch Prime members can claim three free months of Nintendo Switch Online when they visit twitch.amazon.com/Nintendo.
“After 60 days, they can come back to get another nine months of Nintendo Switch Online, for a total of 12 months,” Twitch wrote in a March 28 blog post. “Those who already have a Nintendo Switch Online membership will have these additional months added to their existing Nintendo Switch Online membership. Twitch Prime members have until Sept. 24, 2019 to claim their three months of Nintendo Switch Online, and until January 22, 2020 to claim the additional nine months.”
The offer will expire Sept. 24, 2019, and members will no longer be able to claim the Twitch Prime membership after that date. Members must at least have an Amazon Prime account for 30-days to claim the free three-month trial offer and remain a Prime Member to claim the next 9-month membership offer for free.
According to the Motely Fool, promoting a free year of Nintendo Switch Online draw more Twitch viewers, boost Amazon Prime sign ups to gain access the free Nintendo Switch Online membership offer.
“Doing so would tether those gamers to Amazon’s growing Prime ecosystem, which recently surpassed 100 million members in the US, according to Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP),” Motely Fool wrote in an April 5 article.
The Motely Fool also wrote that this partnership not only helps Amazon, but Nintendo as well.
“Nintendo shipped about 32.5 million Switches worldwide since the hybrid console’s launch two years ago. Sales of the Switch were initially robust but cooled off over the past year due to the saturation of the current-gen console market,” Motely Fool wrote.
