The commute to & from work has always been something that most Americans can’t seem to find a way to deal with. It feels like you’re always in your car & for most Americans that is the case as according to a recent study by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety we spend more than 70 billion hours behind the wheel, with most of that going to work or school. Spotify, one of the largest streaming services in the world, has found a way to alleviate the stress & annoyance of the commute with a new playlist dubbed “The Daily Drive”.
The Daily Drive is a personalized playlist filled with music based on your tastes, but adds relevant news podcasts from Wall Street Journal, PRI, and NPR. It’s unknown whether or not there will be more sources added down the line, but it’s possible if more people listen & use the new personalized playlist.
The response from the new playlist has been overwhelmingly positive. Many users, as TechCrunch reported, have had positive experiences with the new playlist with one user saying “Great idea to format like radio but catered to you.” and another user describing her experience as “I like listening to the news but it gets a bit exhausting sometimes and this is just enough along with my fave music!”. TechCrunch tried to get a hold of Spotify for an explanation or details about the playlist, but Spotify declined. A spokesperson for the streaming service said “We’re always testing new products and experiences, but have no further news to share at this time”.
This announcement comes a month after Spotify announced it’s Car Thing. A bluetooth device that is voice controlled & can play your Spotify music, playlists, and podcasts within the car. Similar to how Amazon’s Echo Auto works, but for your Amazon music. The Car Thing is still under development with no new updates as of its initial announcement back in May of this year.
As of now The Daily Drive is only available in the United States, however some users outside of the US have stumbled upon it, like in Italy according to iPhoneItalia. Users can check out the new playlist right now by going into the “Made For You” section of the Spotify app on iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, Linux, and Web.
