Perhaps spurred by the success of Detective Pikachu, it seems like more and more people are getting behind the reawakening of video game to movie adaptations. Now, even Tom Clancy’s The Division is getting a shot at the big screen. The good news is, the game in question isn’t as old or as lore intensive as many other games are, so it shouldn’t be all that hard to adapt it to the big screen without angering a legion of fans. That said, the movie is still in its early stages; the script is still being written, which means we can’t expect it anytime soon.
The movie will star Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain, and is being directed by David Leitch, who also did Deadpool 2 and Hobbs & Shaw. Leitch recently did an interview on Netflix detailing how the movie was coming along in these early stages.
“I’m excited about the material, and it is potentially next for us. We are currently in the script phase. Then, it’s about getting everybody’s schedules to line up and making sure that we’re ready to go with a script we’re 100 percent behind.”
According to Leitch, the process of getting everything needed to break ground with The Division movie is “accelerating quickly.” He’s also stated his confidence in the fact that the right team was assembled in order to give this movie a real shot at being not just good, but great.
“I love that material, and I love the potential of working with those two incredible actors. The creative team on that is Kelly McCormick as producer, myself, Jake and Jessica. We have a really core team that cares about the material and is going to work hard to make it great.”
In an entirely different interview, Gyllenhaal said he was interested in training for this movie at Leitch’s 87Eleven action design studio, the same place Keanu Reeves trained for his starring role in action franchise John Wick.
“Yeah! I’m up for it. I’m up for anything, man,” Gyllenhaal said. “This job is about the experiences you have off-camera as much as the experiences you have on-camera. So, I’m down.”
As of right now, we don’t really know anything about the movie; we have no idea what its plot will be, when filming will even begin taking place, or an estimate of when it would potentially be released. All we know is the basic premise of it taking place in a pandemic-stricken Manhattan, which is the same setting as the first game.
Regardless of all that, we should hope that the movie is good and it does well; if both of those are true, the chances of getting more and more worthwhile video game movie adaptations increases significantly.
