Netflix Smart Downloads Now Available for iOS Devices

On-the-go smartphone users can now access Smart Download on Netflix as part of the download feature introduced Nov. 30 2016. Users could download episodes and movies at no extra cost to their current streaming service plan.

Netflix announced an update to the download feature, Smart Download Feb. 7. iOS and Windows 10 customers are able to use this feature. Smart downloads were available for Android devices in July 2018.

The Download feature allowed users to download episodes from a series and watch it offline when they may be commuting or have unstable internet access. The feature did not automatically delete episodes that had already been watched. That’s where Smart Download comes in. The Smart Download feature allows Netflix users to manage their space on a mobile device or tablet. If the Netflix user has downloaded several episodes of a series, Smart Download will automatically delete an episode after it’s been watched and download the next episode in the series.

Cameron Johnson, Netflix director of product innovation, said in a release that the company knows how annoying it can be to go through all your apps and delete files you no longer need.

“We also understand that when it comes to Netflix, the faster you can get to the next episode you want to watch, the better,” Johnson said. “Whether it is smart downloading or viewing a mobile preview, we realize the best part of Netflix is connecting with the stories you will love in an easier and more fun way.”

Smart Download will download episodes when a user is connected to Wi-Fi and will never use plan data. The Smart Download feature will also help manage a device’s storage by deleting the last-watched episode before downloading another episode. The feature is available on Android and Apple mobile devices, including tablets and smartphones, and on computers and tablets running Windows 10.

“We also want to emphasize that giving consumers more control over their entertainment experience is at the heart of everything we do, and members can choose when they want to use Smart Downloads,” Johnson said.
